That depends on your software and business need. Grandfather/Father/Son strategy was useful when using tape. You had to have archives running weekly/monthly as the chain of incremental tapes couldn't be your only backup as if you lost one tape it would destroy the integrity of the entire chain.

The gap in this was that in a full restore scenario you could go back to your last weekly archive but replacing the changes between the last week and the following incrementals was often impossible. Bu these were in the days of physical servers and Backup Exec 10d. Things have moved on and we can now rely on virtual machine block backup to ensure we can...
